The other day we were eating dinner at the table and Aliece told one of her siblings in a joking manner, "Kill Yourself!" Amber and I looked at each other a little concerned and told Aliece that we don't say those kinds of things. Aliece said, "I was just joking, they say it on Mr. Incredible."
I racked my brain, going through the lines of the movie trying to remember any such line. I could not recall them saying anything like that. Before I could challenge her on her statement, however, Johnathan corrected her by saying, "No sir, Aliece, in Mr. Incredible they say 'Shoot Yourself!'"
Now,this wasn't much better than the first statement. So, Amber and I started in on how we really shouldn't say that either - not even in play. I was then about to go in on the shows we watch and the things we quote from them when Aylee hopped into the conversation, "Johnathan, you're wrong....in the movie they say 'Show Yourself!'"
So, I guess that even when your kids are watching clean, kid-centric movies, they can still take undesirable language and habits from them. In this instance, "Show Yourself" (as understood by our oldest) was understood from the next younger child as "Shoot Yourself" which statement then morphed for the next younger child into "Kill Yourself".
People must wonder what we let our children watch!
